The Governor of Benue State, Hyacinth Alia has continued to demonstrate stinking corruption and financial recklessness with resources of the state and the 23 local governments since he came to power in 2023. The governor’s latest move by the governor is the removal of his Special Adviser on Bureau for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Denen Aondoakaa to personally assume the role and have full control of FAAC allocations to the local governments which have now quadrupled.

In the month of August this year alone, the 23 local governments of Benue State received a total of ₦32,265,107,195,33 (₦32.2 billion) from FAAC. The funds disappeared under the purview of Governor Alia and there has been no record of accountability.

Governor Alia has been involved in uncountable levels of corruption with billions of state and local government funds under his control missing and unaccounted for. Local government chairmen in the state have been lamenting the diversion and control of their monthly allocations by the governor, despite the Supreme Court’s landmark July 2024 judgment granting financial autonomy to the councils.

Under the Alia administration, local government governance has totally collapsed across Benue State.

It is now clear why Alia was strongly opposing local government autonomy and fought against it up to the Supreme Court. He wants to remain fully in charge of local government funds without allowing the councils to execute any project.
