As Reverend Dr. Uma Ukpai, the father of Nigeria’s Pentecostal Christian movement, celebrates his 80th birthday, his legacy extends far beyond his evangelical work. Nestled in the tranquil town of Asaga Ohafia, Abia State, the Uma Ukpai Eye Centre has become a lifeline for over 80 rural communities across six local government areas in three states. Established in 2016 as part of the King of Kings Specialist Hospital, the centre has transformed access to quality eye care for thousands of Nigerians who once had no hope of treatment.
A Visionary Mission
Dr. Anya Kalu, Consultant Ophthalmologist and Phaco Surgeon at the Uma Ukpai Eye Centre, explains that the facility was born out of Reverend Dr. Uma Ukpai’s belief that “a giver will always find favour with God and man.” Together with his wife, Dr. Philomena Ukpai, the couple envisioned a centre that would provide clinical, surgical, and optical services to underserved populations.
From its inception, the centre has operated with a zero-tolerance policy for errors, ensuring that patients receive the highest standard of care. This commitment has earned the King of Kings Specialist Hospital a reputation as a true specialist medical institution.
Pioneering Advanced Care
In 2021, the Eye Centre underwent a significant upgrade, introducing Phacoemulsification Cataract Surgery, commonly known as “laser cataract surgery.” This advanced technique, rarely available in rural settings, has revolutionized eye care for patients in the region.
“Everyone wants quality,” says Dr. Kalu. “We are very grateful to Reverend and Mrs. Uma Ukpai for this gift of sight to humanity.” Today, the Uma Ukpai Eye Centre is one of only three facilities in Abia State offering this cutting-edge procedure, making it a rare gem in rural healthcare.
Training the Next Generation
Beyond providing care, the Eye Centre is also shaping the future of ophthalmology in Nigeria. By partnering with higher institutions, the centre is training the next generation of eye care professionals, ensuring that its impact extends far beyond its immediate service area.
A Legacy of Sacrifice and Service
The King of Kings Specialist Hospital, which houses the Eye Centre, has been a pillar of the community since 1999. Offering 24-hour services across multiple specialties, including internal medicine, general surgery, radiology, and obstetrics and gynecology, the hospital embodies the mission of the Uma Ukpai Evangelical Association: to care for the body while trusting God to heal the soul.
Dr. Kalu reflects on the sacrifices made by Reverend and Mrs. Uma Ukpai, stating, “We may not know what sacrifices you have made, but God sees your labor of love and will reward you.”
Celebrating a Life of Impact
As Reverend Dr. Uma Ukpai marks his 80th birthday, the gratitude of the communities he has served is palpable. Through his vision, countless individuals have regained their sight, dignity, and hope. The Uma Ukpai Eye Centre stands as a testament to what can be achieved when faith, compassion, and innovation come together.
For the rural communities it serves, the centre is more than a healthcare facility—it is a beacon of light and a source of renewed hope. With continued support and innovation, the Uma Ukpai Eye Centre and the King of Kings Specialist Hospital are poised to expand their impact, setting a benchmark for rural healthcare not only in Nigeria but across Africa.
As the saying goes, “A river that does not flow out cannot produce good water.” Thanks to Reverend and Mrs. Uma Ukpai, this river of compassion continues to flow, enriching the lives of all who encounter it.
Happy 80th Birthday, Reverend Dr. Uma Ukpai!
