Global Airline Passenger Load Factor Hits Record 83.5% in 2024, IATA Reports

The global aviation industry achieved a historic milestone in 2024, with airlines recording an unprecedented passenger load factor of 83.5%, according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA). The December 2024 passenger market performance report revealed that international traffic grew by 13.6% year-on-year, while airspace restrictions and supply chain constraints reshaped global flight networks.

The load factor, which measures the percentage of available seats filled with paying passengers, reflects the industry’s efficiency in managing capacity. Revenue Passenger-Kilometers (RPK), a key metric for demand, also rose by 10.4% compared to 2023.

IATA’s Director General, Willie Walsh, attributed the record-breaking performance to strong passenger demand and supply chain challenges that forced airlines to optimize available seating. “2024 demonstrated an undeniable desire for travel, with demand growing by 10.4% domestically and internationally,” Walsh said. “Airlines responded with remarkable efficiency, filling 83.5% of seats on average—a new record high.”

Key Highlights from the Report

  • Global Capacity Growth: Airline capacity increased by 8.7% in 2024, with international capacity rising by 12.8% and domestic capacity by 2.5%.
